The Circuit Rider Fellow is a one-year opportunity to work with Preservation Connecticut staff and preservation professionals across the state. This opportunity is intended to support early career development for public historians, historic preservationists, architectural historians, architects, engineers, community organizers, urban planners, and other early professionals with an interest in historic preservation.

Currently, Preservation Connecticut has a team of four Circuit Riders who facilitate the repair, rehabilitation, and reuse of historic places while enhancing local stewardship and policy-making capabilities. This position will support the Circuit Riders and Preservation Connecticut’s programs by providing on-site technical assistance and guidance to stakeholders involved in historic preservation across Connecticut. It will remain open until filled.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct site visits and assessments to provide technical assistance by identifying planning and capital needs and recommending appropriate preservation techniques.
  • Assist in promoting and administering Preservation Connecticut’s grant programs, including applicant support.
  • Collaborate closely with the Preservation Connecticut staff on a $6 million capital project in Bridgeport funded by the State of Connecticut Community Investment Fund 2030. This includes assisting in coordinating economic, architectural, and engineering studies and the restoration efforts of significant buildings in the Washington Park area.
  • Engage with Preservation Connecticut’s constituents, including historical societies, property owners, developers, elected officials, and local preservation commissions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in History, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Sociology, Art History, Political Science or a related field.
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks efficiently.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and be willing to travel extensively within Connecticut.
