The Circuit Rider Fellow is a two-year, entry-level position with Preservation Connecticut, providing an opportunity to collaborate with preservation experts across the state. This position aims to foster the early careers of public historians, historic preservationists, architectural historians, architects, engineers, community organizers, urban planners, and other professionals interested in historic preservation. The Circuit Rider Fellow will work closely with Preservation Connecticut staff to support statewide efforts to save, repair, rehabilitate, and adaptively reuse historic sites, while boosting local stewardship and policy development. They will contribute to the Circuit Rider Program by providing on-site technical assistance and guidance to preservation stakeholders throughout Connecticut. The Circuit Rider may participate in a variety of projects, including historic resource surveys, nominations for the State and National Register of Historic Places, and educational initiatives. Additionally, this position may assist with coordinating economic, architectural, and engineering studies for a special project in Bridgeport, CT, and provide administrative and development support to staff as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct site visits and guide constituents by identifying capital needs and recommending appropriate preservation actions.
• Assist in promoting and administering Preservation Connecticut’s grant programs, including applicant support.
• Collaborate closely with the Preservation Connecticut staff on a $5+ million capital project in Bridgeport funded by the State of Connecticut Community Investment Fund 2030.
• Engage with Preservation Connecticut’s constituents, including historical societies, property owners, developers, elected officials, and local preservation commissions.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in History, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Sociology, Art History, Political Science, or a related field.
• The applicant must be organized, detail-oriented, and have exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to work independently and manage tasks efficiently.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and be willing to travel extensively within Connecticut.
Desired Qualifications:
• Master’s degree from an accredited university in History, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Sociology, Art History, Political Science, or a related field
• Experience working with video and audio production.
