The Mark Twain House & Museum seeks a Development Assistant to join our team in supporting our fundraising and membership operations. An excellent opportunity for the right candidate who wants to build on their nonprofit Development experience and learn historical organization functions, a database and/or Development professional re-entering the workplace after a hiatus, or an experienced Development professional looking to reduce their work time as they ease into retirement.
Who we are
The Mark Twain House & Museum is the primary American museum dedicated to the life, legacy, and literary work of Samuel Clemens. From this house, Twain changed the way the world viewed Americans and the way Americans viewed themselves. It was here that he wrote his best-known books during the 17 years of his residence. The Museum typically sees over 50,000 visitors in-person every year from all 50 states and dozens of countries around the world. In 2020, the Museum created a strong online presence reaching an audience of 110,000 through its virtual house tour and online lectures with notable speakers and authors.
The Development Assistant is a key member of the Development team, providing excellent service to donors and members, processing and acknowledging donations and memberships accurately, and maintaining the donor/member database with accurate and up-to-date information. The individual assists with the implementation of a comprehensive development strategy for The Mark Twain House & Museum and provides assistance with tasks related to achieving fundraising goals.

This position is on-site in Hartford, CT, 25 hours per week, $22 per hour. Flexibility with scheduling, though prefer workdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Anticipated position start late January or February 2026. Opportunity for full-time work after one year.
